Secondary Traumatic Stress Support in Kitchener & Waterloo Region

Caring for Those Who Care for Others

Supporting people through trauma, crisis, or suffering can take a deep emotional toll. Over time, absorbing the stories, pain, and stress of others can begin to affect your own well-being. This is known as Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS), and it is a real, valid response to caring deeply and showing up for others.

At Kitchener Therapy Collaborative, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed support for individuals experiencing secondary traumatic stress. You deserve care, understanding, and space to heal, too.

What Is Secondary Traumatic Stress?

Secondary Traumatic Stress occurs when exposure to another person’s trauma begins to impact your emotional, mental, or physical health. It is common among:

  • healthcare workers

  • social workers and counsellors

  • first responders

  • educators

  • caregivers

  • support staff in high-stress environments

STS does not mean you are weak or unprofessional. It means your nervous system has been carrying too much for too long.

Common Signs of Secondary Traumatic Stress

You may notice:

  • emotional exhaustion or numbness

  • irritability, anxiety, or sadness

  • difficulty sleeping or concentrating

  • feeling detached from others

  • heightened sensitivity to stress

  • physical tension or fatigue

  • loss of motivation or compassion

These symptoms can quietly build over time and may begin to affect both your work and personal life.

Our Approach to Supporting STS

Our work is grounded in compassion, safety, and collaboration. We help you:

  • understand how secondary trauma is affecting you

  • reconnect with your emotional and physical boundaries

  • develop strategies to regulate your nervous system

  • process emotional impact in a safe, contained way

  • rebuild balance, resilience, and energy

You are never expected to share anything you’re not ready to. Therapy is paced with respect for your capacity and your needs.

Trauma-Informed and Evidence-Based Care

We use approaches that support nervous system regulation, emotional safety, and sustainable wellbeing, including:

  • trauma-informed therapy practices

  • mindfulness and grounding techniques

  • strengths-based and reflective approaches

  • emotional regulation strategies

  • boundary and self-care skill development

As registered social workers, we cannot diagnose, but we will work with you to assess patterns, impacts, and supports, and to create a plan that nurtures recovery and long-term wellbeing.

You Deserve Support Too

Caring for others should not come at the cost of your own health.
You matter. Your well-being matters.

If you’re feeling emotionally depleted, overwhelmed, or disconnected, support is available.
